Since 2014, the U.N. has sponsored an annual ‘World Cities Day’ on 31 October to promote citizen interest in our growing cities, as well as to encourage international cooperation in taking advantage of the opportunities and addressing the challenges of urbanization.
In 2016, more than 3.5 billion people, or over half the world’s population, lived in cities. By 2030, that figure is expected to rise to 5 billion. Nearly 60% of the population will live in urban areas. This reality will present challenges and difficulties, but will also offer enormous opportunities.
Cosentino has joined the celebration of World Cities Day with its launch in recent years of the ‘Cosentino City’ centre concept. These are centres open to the public that promote culture, art, fashion, urban studies and new models for the design and architecture of the future.
With nine of these spaces already in operation in some of the world’s most major cities (Sidney, Singapore, New York, San Francisco, Toronto, Montreal, Milan, London and Madrid), the company is making its own small contribution towards the achievement of the Agenda 2030 goals for sustainable and integrated urban development. A new concept for an exhibition space located at the heart of each great city, these centres are using an integrated, multidisciplinary vision to contribute to the creation of intelligent, efficient urban spaces that respect the environment.
Through our permanent commitment to innovation and socially responsible management, day-to-day activities and the ‘City showrooms’ and ‘Centres’ that we’ve built around the globe, Cosentino is always searching for effective solutions for new urban environments, seeking to maximize cities’ ability to generate employment and wealth, as well as facilitating the sustainable use of shared resources.
